Grasshopper found in van Gogh painting at Kansas City museum
KANSAS CITY, MO.
A small grasshopper has been found embedded in a Vincent van Gogh painting at a Kansas City museum.
Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853 – 1890). Olive Trees.1889. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: Unframed: 28 3/4 x 36 1/4 inches (73.03 x 92.08 cm). Framed: 37 3/4 x 45 1/2 x 2 inches (95.89 x 115.57 x 5.08 cm). Purchase: William Rockhill Nelson Trust. 32-2.
This photo provided by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Mo., shows Vincent van Gogh's painting "Olive Trees." 작은 메뚜기 사체가 캔자스 시티 박물관에 전시된 빈센트 반 고흐(Vincent van Gogh)그림에 눌러 박혀 발견되었다.
넬슨-앳킨스 미술관 (Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art)은 보도 자료에서 곤충이 유명한 화가의 "올리브 나무"("Olive Trees")의 두꺼운 페인트에 눌러 붙어 있다고 전했다. 반 고흐 (Van Gogh)는 생전 야외에서 그림을 그리기로 유명했으며 1885년 동생에게 보낸 편지에서는 "네가 받게 될 4개의 캔버스는 내가 백여마리 이상의 날파리 곤충들을 하나하나 떼어내야 했었다”라고 썼다.
회화를 관리하는 매리 샤퍼씨는 (Conservator Mary Schafer)는 확대경으로 그림을 조사하던 중 메뚜기 사체를 발견했다. 육안 관찰을 통해서 들여다 봐가지고서는 곤충을 볼 수는 없다.

한편, 이 그림에 대한 면밀한 연구는 해당 박물관에서 104개의 프랑스 그림과 파스텔화에 대한 온라인 카탈로그를 만드는 노력의 일환으로 이루어졌다.
이 메뚜기 발견에 대해 미술관측은 고흐라는 유명한 화가의 작업을 좀 더 잘 이해할 수 있는 계기가 되었고 과학적 연구와 미술사적 리서치 협력을 통해서 세상에 들어나게 된 흥분된 결과의 하나로 자평한다.
