2024 년 12 월 3 일 밤, 대한민국민주주의는 또한번 중대한위기에 처했다. 윤석열은 대통령의 지위를남용하여 헌법적 근거 없이 비상계엄령을 선포하고 국민의 자유를 억압했다. 이는 명백한 위헌 행위이자, 민주주의의 근본을 부정하는 폭거이다.
국민의 단호한 대응으로 계엄령은 2 시간 30분 만에 해제되었으나, 탄핵소추안은 국민의힘 의원들의 조직적 방해로 국회에서 논의조차 이루어지지 못했다. 이는 헌법에 명시된 국민 주권의 원칙을 정면 부정한 것으로, 21 세기 대한민국에서 결코용납될수 없는내란적 행위이다.

Korean Community in Melbourne Marks Historic Moment with Impeachment Rally
On the evening of 14 December, the South Korean National Assembly began voting on the impeachment motion. At the same time, one of Australia's largest pro-impeachment rallies took place in Melbourne. Demonstrators held signs saying 'Impeach Yoon Now' and collectively read a public statement. More than 500 Korean expatriates gathered outside the State Library of Victoria. The crowd included people who had travelled several hours by train, and even some who had flown in from Sydney to help.
The rally was organised by the Melbourne Korean Democratic Declaration, a voluntary group formed by individuals outraged by the recent crisis. The group called for an immediate resolution of the impeachment motion, a thorough investigation and prosecution of those involved in treason, and a reminder to lawmakers to uphold their constitutional duties and serve the people. They condemned the events of 3 December as "an act of treason that cannot be tolerated in 21st century Korea".
Pansori singer Ye-won Jo captivated the crowd with her powerful performances of "Beautiful Land"(Moony) and "Arirang". Here are some of the lyrics from Beautiful Land: "When winter's snowflakes rest softly, The warm white glow soothes even the strong wind. Born in this land of many dreams, How happy I am to be here."
The declaration statement was read by Zion Kim in English, expressing the desires of South Koreans residing abroad. Please find below an excerpt from the declaration:
We, the citizens of South Korea in Melbourne, now stand against the president to protect our democracy and its freedom.
We, do not let distance from our homeland discourage us from expressing our voices.
Thus, this ‘Declaration on the Nation’s Current State of Affairs’ admantly demands that:
1. President Yoon and all those guilty of treason immediately resign
2. All politicians listen to public opinion and participate in the impeachment of Yoon to protect the integrity of democracy and its constitution
3. The government recognise the gravity of this crisis and thoroughly investigate and punish all relevant individuals according to law.
The moment the impeachment motion was passed came immediately after participants sang "Impeachment is the answer" and chanted for impeachment. At 7 PM local time on the 14th, news of the impeachment motion's passage was shared via the on-site monitor, triggering a wave of cheers among the community.
Amidst the uncontrollable cheering, scenes of individuals holding hands or shedding tears were captured throughout the crowd. Everyone came together to share in the joy of the impeachment motion's passage.
Standing on the podium afterwards, 26-year-old Doyeon Guk emphasised the collective power of unity: "Our strength lies in individuals coming together for a common cause. Until all the facts are revealed and those responsible for treason bow before the Constitution, let us remain vigilant, united and relentless in our fight for justice.”
Ray Kim, a teacher in Melbourne, had a powerful message for his students: “I just want to tell my kids today, guys, remember, whatever injustice you face and whatever unfair situation you encounter, people are with you, and people's liberty and people's rights will always prevail. So do not fear. We’ll always be together to fight for what’s right.”
The rally was also attended by foreign supporters, who held signs and sang along with the APT. Many praised the peaceful yet powerful style of the Korean protest.
Harrisman, who was passing by and observing the protest, shared his thoughts on South Korea’s unique protest culture:
"I honestly think it’s taking peaceful protesting to the next level. I’ve never seen anything like it before, and I feel that more causes should utilize music and song in protests, as it really brings people together. I also heard them singing APT, which I think is a great way to foster intergenerational unity. So, I would definitely rate it 100%. I believe this is a great tool for future protests."
He also added: "It’s kind of nice to see because I think a lot of people feel disillusioned by the power of protests, where you see them happening but don’t really witness any results—governments don’t listen. But I think this feels like a win, so yeah, I’m really glad to see South Koreans achieve this result. I hope democracy continues to thrive."
Haylie Lee, 33, the head of the Melbourne Korean Democratic Declaration organising committee, reflected on the preparations for the rally, which took less than two weeks. She stated, “I was aware that there would be others willing to contribute, so I reached out to people and many offered their skills and even donated money. The turnout exceeded our expectations, so much so that we didn't have enough signs and printed statements for everyone”
Lee added: "Despite our different backgrounds or political beliefs, we came together with one heart to raise our voices and share this moment of joy. While today's rally celebrated the passing of the impeachment motion, the Korean community in Melbourne will continue to monitor the situation until all those involved are held legally accountable for their actions.”
